A Sista.Love Series on Building Financial Independence
The phrase “A man is not a financial plan” was popularised in South African financial circles by Jeanette Marais, CEO of Momentum Group. It’s a clever line, but behind the wit lies a serious truth: too many women have been taught, be it directly or indirectly, that financial security will come from someone else.
At Sista.Love, we believe something different. We believe financial independence is not a luxury, but a necessity. It’s the key to freedom, dignity, and choice. It allows us to walk away from situations that don’t serve us. We can choose to care for our children and families on our own terms, and to build lives that reflect our full worth.
Our mothers and grandmothers often carried wisdom about stretching a rand, but they weren’t always given access to financial decision-making. Many were raised on the belief that a husband or partner was the ultimate financial plan. Today, more and more women are breaking that generational script and choose independence, learning about money, and claiming the right to build security for themselves and their families.
The good news? More women are starting to claim this space for themselves. We’re seeing more South African women budget, invest, buy property, start businesses, and create safety nets that don’t rely on anyone else. It’s not always easy, there are hurdles like pay gaps, career interruptions, and cultural expectations but the tide is shifting.
This Sista.Love series is about that shift. It’s about the conversations we need to have with each other about money: the myths to break, the knowledge to gain, and the courage to take practical steps forward. Most importantly, it’s about creating a space where we can learn from one another’s experiences and grow stronger together.
Because here, we don’t wait to be rescued.
We Pulse together in the Power of Possibility.
